About the program
Launched in 1989, the Jean Monnet Action Program aims to promote excellence in teaching, research, reflection and debate in European integration studies within different disciplines in higher education institutions across the globe. It is named after French political economist and diplomat Jean Monnet (1888-1979), one of the main architects of European unity.
The program supports teaching and research through creation of Jean Monnet Chairs, Centers of Excellence and Teaching Modules. Furthermore, academic associations of professors and researchers in European integration are funded under this initiative.
Since 2007, the Jean Monnet activities were an integral part of Lifelong Learning Program of the European Union replaced in 2014 by Erasmus+ program. They are administrated by the “Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency” of the European Commission, established in 2005.
Projects are selected on the basis of their academic merits and following a process of rigorous and independent peer review. Jean Monnet network is valuable and academically prestigious precisely because it is intended to be a source of independent and critical analysis on various EU-related issues. The Commission does not impose any restrictions on the academic freedom of recipients of Jean Monnet professorships.
