International Conference "Approaches of the European Union and Russia to Transboundary Security Threats"

On the basis of the National Research Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, the International Conference "Approaches of the European Union and Russia to Transboundary Security Threats" was held on May 24-26, 2018. This event was the final stage of the implementation of two projects of Jean Monnet program. The coordinator of both projects is the senior lecturer of the European and International Law Department of Nizhni Novgorod University – Andrey Leonov. The conference was attended by researchers from the Institute of Europe RAS, as well as universities of Russia, Finland, France, Italy and Japan. History faculty of Irkutsk State University and Fernand Braudel Center were represented by Nadezhda Chugunova, a post-graduate student at the Chair of World History and International Relations. The paper of young researcher called "The European Union and Transnational Security Threats in Program Documents and the Public Discourse of Regionalist Parties in France" was built on an analysis of official documents of the regionalist parties of Alsace and Brittany. N. Chugunova concluded that there is an explicit regionalist agenda in the program documents of both parties, and the parties differently assess cross-border security threats. However, in the fight against these threats, both prefer to rely more on the aid of the European Union than France.

The conference, which consisted of two parts, was held in an unusual format. The first part was an international seminar for graduate students. The second part consisted of three sections. Within the framework of these sections, issues of security and control over transboundary threats relevant to modern world politics were considered.

The participation of CIES in the work of such a large-scale conference makes it possible develop research network in the area of European studies with researches from different countries and different regions of Russia.
