European identity: theory and practice
Summary of content:
The course covers the problems of European identity with a focus on political identity of the EU. The syllabus includes the following sections:
1) The concept of common European identity. Its meaning. Its relationship with European integration,
2) The roots of European identity. Historical, political and cultural issues of European identity development,
3) European identity as a category of political discourse and as instrument of European integration. Theoretical issues and political realities,
4) The relationship between national and European identity,
5) The role of European identity in EU foreign policy. Europeanization of foreign policy. Foreign policy identity of the EU as a civilian power, soft power, normative power, model power, transformative power etc. The concept of Empire. Imperial identity of the EU.
6) European identity in Russia and Siberia.
